In 1983, SOS Children's Villages
began its work in the Indian state of Assam
in the north-east of the country, after many
families had been separated and numerous children
had lost their parents during heavy clashes
between the local population and immigrants
from Bangladesh and West Bengal. The SOS Children's
Village Bhakatpara was built with the support
of the Department of Social Welfare. This SOS
Children's Village is located about 15 km from
Mangaldoi, the headquarters of the district.
The Children's Village has
14 family houses and other necessary infrastructure.
The Children's Village runs its own SOS Vocational
Training and Production Centre, where the youngsters
can learn various crafts. The children attend
the schools in the vicinity of the Children's
Village, which is good for their social integration.
The older boys usually move to the SOS Youth
House. The nearest hospital is in Mangaldoi
but the SOS Children's Village has its own medical
ward, which is also open to the population of
the neighbourhood.
The construction of the Children's
Village was started in 1983 and the first children
were settled in the Village in 1984. The Village
was dedicated to the needy children of the state
of Assam on February 3, 1984.
At present there are 44 children,
out of them 25 are attending different schools
in the neighbourhood. There are regular sessions
with children to counsel, support and strengthen
in all round activities.
SOS Youth Facility
Bhakatpara Children's Village
has one youth facility in which Arunodaya and
Sopan are merged. Presently, 18 children are
living in Arunodaya and 18 are living in Sopan.
