CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

A small beginning was made in 1990 in the wake of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy when a new Children’s Village was started to take care of the children orphaned. The well connected ten acre plot was gifted by the Madhya Pradesh Government. The Village was dedicated to the nation on 24th January, 1996. Surrounded by lush greenery and a picturesque setting near the planned township of BHEL, SOS Bhopal prides itself for an attractive temple situated inside its campus.

The Village comprises of 16 family houses where 183 children, 55 boys and 128 girls grow under the loving care of dedicated mothers and aunts. 20 children came home during the year.

Academically children did well during the year. Over 95% children passed and were promoted to the next class. Ritwik of class I scored the highest in his school. Suganda studying at St Paul’s Public School got high marks, while Vidya doing her beauticians course from the prestigious VLCC at Lucknow received the best student’s award.

During summer vacation, children attended hobby, computer and English speaking classes and improved their skills in their areas of interest. A fashion design course has been started at the Village Tailoring Centre to benefit our children as well as those from the nearby community.

World Environment Day saw WHO organize a trip for children to Van Vihar, where children were happy to see animals in a near natural setting. On World Astronomy Day resource persons from voluntary organizations held an awareness program and slide show on astronomy for our children.

SOS YOUTH FACILITIES

Two Youth Facilities ‘Arunodai’ and ‘Sopaan’ where 52 youth are on roll are an integral part of SOS Children’s Village, Bhopal. During the last academic session the overall pass percentage of these facilities was 100%. Excelling academically were Arunodai youth Harish, Jay and Subhashish. Sajid, Basant, Manoj and Devashish are good football players. They participated in a football match organized under the Rashtriya Khel Kood Pratiyogyata 2007-08 and won the event qualifying for the 53rd National Games.

During past few months marriages of 4 girls and 1 boy were solemnized with ceremony and ritual.

SOS HERMANN GMEINER PRIMARY SCHOOL

The Hermann Gmeiner Primary School, Bhopal was set up in the Children’s Village campus in1998. It is a co-educational, English medium school imparting quality education to our children and those from the neighbouring community. The school has achieved a 100% result. 31 students were granted scholarships. Health Awareness and regular Yoga and Karate classes are an integral part of its activities. Its present strength is 256 children.

FAMILY STRENGTHENING PROGRAMME

SOS Children’s Village Bhopal runs a Family Strenthening Program in support of impoverished families in the neighbouring communities, to help them achieve self sufficiency and lead decent lives. The program was inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Government of Madhya Pradesh Mr Shivraj Singh Chauhan. The program extends financial support to 200 mothers and 509 children. Two SOS co-workers pay regular visits and monitor progress.
