CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

In Assam, the first two SOS Children's Villages Bhakatpara and Hojai came into being simultaneously in February and March 1984 after the ethnic violence of Assam in 1983. To accommodate the additional number of needy children, SOS Children's Village Guwahati was planned, established and started functioning in the capital city Guwahati in 1989.

In Guwahati, 73 families and their 189 children are being supported towards the education, health and nutrition. Besides 100 children from the neighbouring underprivileged families come to the Children's Village every day for few hours. These children are provided with educational support and a meal. It is the aim of SOS-India to prepare these children for formal schooling and at present 57 children are attending formal schools under this programme.

MAKING US PROUD

Govinda Boro
Govinda was brought home along with his younger sister Ms. Mangoli Boro at the age of 6, after the death of his parents. He was an average student from his childhood. But every human being has some quality of his own and in the same way Govinda Boro also had a special penchant in the field of games & sports from his childhood. At his early stage he was very much interested in Athletics but over a period of time he developed a deep interest in Football. The sight of the football would make young Govinda run around the field and putting the ball into the net would become his sole mission. Seeing his passion in football and his skill in drifting the ball, he was given special coaching at the Village level and later he was admitted in the SAI (Sports Authority of India) in the year 1998. And within a few months he surprised all with his talents and got selection in state level teams. After that there was no looking back for Govinda who represented Assam on many occasions in different tournaments in India, like the prestigious Subroto Mukherjee Cup football tournament, New Delhi, National School Games'2000-01 held at J & K where his team was champion, Santosh Trophy Delhi, Jayanti Biswas memorial trophy at Port Blair Andaman and other various prestigious tournaments in Assam as well. He was also declared as Best Goalkeeper by GSA Supper division league championship in 2004. Now he is considered to be one of the best football players of Assam and is already in the league of few of the jewels in this game representing the state.

Recently Govinda represented the State of Assam in the 33rd National Games. This young man from Children's Village Guwahati saved a couple of crucial goals to lead his team to a glorious win, thus bringing glory to all the people of Assam and the SOS Children's Village Family as a whole.

Such is his charisma that the best organizations want him to be playing for them. The Assam Police was the first one to offer him a job, where he continued for some time. Recently he got an offer from the FCI (Food Corporation of India) and is presently offering his services to this Govt. Undertaking. He is very happy with his present job and getting almost double the salary and well settled in the society. The boy is all set to have his own house in a few months and get married to a beautiful girl, whom he has chosen to spend the life with, soon.
