Jammu is the capital of the
state of Jammu & Kashmir. For many years
now terrorism has been a major problem in this
state. It has rendered many a people destitute
and vast majority of the population from the
Valley has moved to other school parts of India
for settlement. In the process many children
have been rendered homeless. SOS Children’s
Village Jammu came into existence to provide
long term family care to these children affected
by the prolonged militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.
Jammu borders Kashmir to the
north, Ladakh to the east, Himachal Pradesh
to the south and Pakistan-administered Kashmir
to the west. The Pir Panjal Range, the Trikuta
Hills and the low-lying Tawi River basin adds
beauty and diversity to the terrain of Jammu.
Jammu City is at an elevation of 1030 ft. above
sea level. Many historians and locals believe
that Jammu was founded by Raja Jamboolochan
in 14th Century BC. Home to a few of the most
popular Hindu shrines, such as Vaishno Devi,
Jammu is one of the most famous pilgrimage destinations
in India.
After Maharaja Hari Singh,
the last ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, signed
the Instrument of Accession in 1947, Jammu became
'a part' of the Union of India. Jammu enjoys
the status of an administrative division within
the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu city,
the largest city in the region, is the winter
capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It is approximately
600 km away from the National Capital, New Delhi
and is linked with the National Highway, railway
and airport.
SOS Children’s Village
Jammu is located on the banks of famous river
Tawi in 13 acres of land about 15 Km from the
Jammu Railway station and 10 Km from the airport.

and they participated wholeheartedly in the

SOS
Kindergarten
Since the Hermann Gmeiner School
is within the Children’s Village campus,
the children from the village attend Nursery
and KG classes in the school itself. However
the Village Kindergarten prepares children from
the village for admission into school.
The Kindergarten is also used
for the neighbouring community to prepare the
children for formal schooling. Around 50 children
from the neighbouring community attend the Kindergarten
under Family Strengthening Program. It is equipped
with all the current play way methods and a
trained KG teacher who runs this. The Village
Kindergarten is equipped with two computers
with special software packages for children.
Music
Lab
The Music Lab in the Children's
Village has been functional since 2004. It was
started with the active support of the State
Bank of India, Jammu. A trained music teacher
imparts training to the children three days
a week.
