CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

Jammu is the capital of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. For many years now terrorism has been a major problem in this state. It has rendered many a people destitute and vast majority of the population from the Valley has moved to other school parts of India for settlement. In the process many children have been rendered homeless. SOS Children’s Village Jammu came into existence to provide long term family care to these children affected by the prolonged militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.

Jammu borders Kashmir to the north, Ladakh to the east, Himachal Pradesh to the south and Pakistan-administered Kashmir to the west. The Pir Panjal Range, the Trikuta Hills and the low-lying Tawi River basin adds beauty and diversity to the terrain of Jammu. Jammu City is at an elevation of 1030 ft. above sea level. Many historians and locals believe that Jammu was founded by Raja Jamboolochan in 14th Century BC. Home to a few of the most popular Hindu shrines, such as Vaishno Devi, Jammu is one of the most famous pilgrimage destinations in India.

After Maharaja Hari Singh, the last ruler of Jammu and Kashmir, signed the Instrument of Accession in 1947, Jammu became 'a part' of the Union of India. Jammu enjoys the status of an administrative division within the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Jammu city, the largest city in the region, is the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir. It is approximately 600 km away from the National Capital, New Delhi and is linked with the National Highway, railway and airport.

SOS Children’s Village Jammu is located on the banks of famous river Tawi in 13 acres of land about 15 Km from the Jammu Railway station and 10 Km from the airport. The famous shrine of Mata Vaishnav Devi is at a distance of 45 Km from the Children’s Village.

The construction of the Children's Village was started in 1996 and the first families moved into the Children's Village in 1998. The Village was dedicated to the nation on 3rd November, 2000. SOS Children's Village Jammu is now a happy home to 169 children (87 boys & 82 girls). 108 children (38 boys & 70 girls) are staying in the Children's Village under the care of their SOS Mothers in 12 family homes, out of which 94 are school going children. These children attend the Hermann Gmeiner School. 15 children are studying in Boarding Schools. 25 youngsters are in Arunodaya & 08 youths are in Sopan. 13 youths are pursuing different professions.

Children's Village Jammu celebrated its first marriage in August, 2006. It was a happy occasion for the children and mothers and they participated wholeheartedly in the celebration.

SOS Kindergarten

Since the Hermann Gmeiner School is within the Children’s Village campus, the children from the village attend Nursery and KG classes in the school itself. However the Village Kindergarten prepares children from the village for admission into school.

The Kindergarten is also used for the neighbouring community to prepare the children for formal schooling. Around 50 children from the neighbouring community attend the Kindergarten under Family Strengthening Program. It is equipped with all the current play way methods and a trained KG teacher who runs this. The Village Kindergarten is equipped with two computers with special software packages for children.

Music Lab

The Music Lab in the Children's Village has been functional since 2004. It was started with the active support of the State Bank of India, Jammu. A trained music teacher imparts training to the children three days a week.

SOS HERMANN GMEINER SCHOOL

SOS Hermann School is co- educational and is affiliated to CBSE up to secondary level. The school, which is located at Gole Gujral Jammu Tawi adjacent to the Children’s Village, was inaugurated on June 1, 2001. Initially, the school was up to Class VIII but now it is upgraded to XII. The first batch of Class XII has started from April, 2006. The medium of education is English.

FAMILY STRENGTHENING PROGRAMME

The Family Strengthening program now reaches out to more than 250 children beneficiaries. 42 Children are successfully in formal schooling having been identified from Nutritional and Literacy Program. 60 Children from the below poverty line families of nearby vicinity are attending this program. Under Strengthening Motherhood Program we cover 40 mothers which include 80 children at present. Besides the regular programmes, Children’s Village Jammu extends support to many children in need through various community action programmes.

Cutting & Tailoring Centers & SPCC: SOS-India is running 8 centers in different parts of Jammu & Udhampur, where cutting, tailoring, Shorthand and Typing knowledge is imparted to girls and married women from below poverty line since 1994. These centers run for 4 hours on a daily basis. On an average 80 students are trained every year.

Ashiyana Orphanage (Kishtwar, J&K): The project was started by the army in the aftermath of Militancy in the hilly areas of Doda district in Jammu under the Sadbhawana Programme. In 2004, the Army constructed a big building which could accommodate 25 youths who had lost their families. The programme was handed over to Mr. Sanjeev Parihar of Kishtwar in 2005 for further running. Due to financial constraints, the programme was not being run in an efficient manner and was almost on the verge of closing. At that crucial juncture, Army authorities along with Mr. Sanjeev Parihar approached SOS-India for help. SOS Children's Village, Jammu has been helping the project under its Family Strengthening Program since January 2006. SOS bears all the nutritional expenses by working in partnership with the Ashiyana Charitable Trust.

Vishwa Bharti School (Akal Pur, Jammu): 70 children (39 girls and 31 boys), who have lost either or both parents, are extended support under Family Strengthening Program. This help is monitored on a year to year basis.
