CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

The capital of Nagapattinam district on the shores of the Bay of Bengal, Nagapattinam is known for its rich religious heritage. 350km down south from the state capital Chennai it is one of the most affected places of 2004 Tsunami.

SOS Children's Village Nagapattinam came into existence after one of the worst natural disasters of the world, the Tsunami. SOS Children's Villages of India provided immediate relief and rehabilitation support to the affected families and children after the Tsunami struck. SOS Children’s Village activities started in Nagapattinam immediately after Tsunami and the children’s village started with 19 children in 3 family homes.

At present the village is home to 61 children, 23 boys and 38 girls, in 8 family homes. The Children's Village has now completed six years of dedicated service to the cause of the needy children. During holidays children learn painting, clay modeling, dancing and music. Children performed well in their annual exams and almost all have been promoted to the next grades.

SOS HERMANN GMEINER MEDICAL CENTRE

The Medical Centre at Nagapattinam was established with an endeavour to provide basic health facilities for poor and needy children. The centre is well equipped with emergency services and has a fully functional lab and an x ray machine .At present the Medical Center is providing health services and awareness programmes to the nearby socio economically backward villages. There is a doctor in the Medical Center to take care of health related problems. There is a Gynecologist for close monitoring of the health of pregnant ladies & health of new born babies. Health camps are also being organized in the Villages for regular check ups. Visits of Doctors and Concerned person from health department happen on regular basis to improve family living standards of the villagers.

FAMILY STRENGTHENING PROGRAMME

Family Strengthening Programme was started after Tsunami. Initially 1500 children where supported through Family Strengthening Programme in Nagapattinam from 28 villages. At present 1250 children from 628 families in 11 Villages close to the Children’s Villages are being reached out through these programmes. SOS Children’s Villages carries out intervention programmes in educational and health care for the beneficiary families. To strengthen families economically, 23 Self Help Groups were formed among women to generate income. Children’s Village is also creating women’s consortium to help these women to avail various helps including financial help from District Industrial Centre.
