Rajpura is situated nearly 40 km south east of Chandigarh, on the National Highway, the capital city of Punjab. It is an industrial town with a number of large and small scale industries with good communications, transportation, medical and educational facilities. Chandigarh airport is at a distance of 45 kms.
SOS Children’s Village was established in Rajpura in 1996 on the request of State Government. It was set up to care for a large number of children rendered homeless and parentless after a decade long violence and terrorism in Punjab. SOS Children’s Village, Rajpura is situated in the heart of Rajpura town and well connected by rail & road.
The Children’s Village is home to 169 children in 14 family homes, with 29 studying in boarding schools. A Kindergarten which takes care of pre-school education and prepares children for formal schooling, a community house, a guest house, learning centre comprising of library, computer lab and a music room, tailoring hobby centre, workshop, dispensary and sports facilities are all a part of the Village facility.
The first batch of children has moved up to higher studies and some have settled down in jobs and become independent. At present, four girls are doing vocational courses in polytechnics / Institutes, eight girls are in nursing courses, one is in Second year of B.Sc. in Hotel Management and one is attending college education. The focus is on job related education so that children can settle down and become independent. 106 children are studying in local schools while 26 are in boarding.
