Picturesque and blessed with
an abundance of nature's gifts, Shillong is
described as the 'Scotland of the East' because
of its striking similarity with that of the
Scottish Highlands. Shillong the capital of
Meghalaya is located at an altitude of 1496
meters above the Sea level. It is a popular
hill station with vastness of culture, language
and religion. With people living in interior
villages where proper medical facilities have
not been able to reach and shortage of gainful
employment, the state has many abandoned and
orphan children who need a home and help for
a hopeful future. SOS Children's Village Shillong
was established to take care of such children.
The Village is situated on a beautiful hillock
overlooking the picturesque Umiam lake spread
over 11.4 acres. The construction of the Children's
Village was started in 1996 and the Village
started functioning from August 1999.
Of the 12 family homes that
we have, we are able to provide accommodation
to around 131 children (53 boys& 78 girls).
The Children's Village also has facilities like
the kindergarten, a dispensary, a small library
and a computer laboratory which are fully functional
and equipped. The Mini-Park and playground are
being well maintained. The Children's Village
also has water Reservoir System and Plant built
with the financial support received from the
PHE Department, Government of Meghalaya.
A Youth Facility, Arunodaya
is functioning inside the premises of SOS Children's
Village, Shillong, since September 2005. At
present, 9 youth are living there.
