CHILDREN’S VILLAGE

Visakhapatnam is the Industrial Capital of the province of Andhra Pradesh. Being a coastal area, prawn seed collection and fishing are the major source of income for most. It is situated between main railway line which connects Chennai and Kolkata. In the year 1995 a devastating cyclone hit Visakhapatnam and caused massive losses. Visakhapatnam Airport is 45 Kms from the village and Railway Station is 35 Kms.

The children’s village at Vishakapatnam was established in the year 1997 and constructed adjacent to the Bay of Bengal. At present there are 236 children under the care of SOS Children’s Village Visakhapatnam, out of which, 134 children stay in 14 family homes inside the village, 52 children are in boarding schools and colleges, while 50 children are in SOS Youth House situated in Visakhapatnam city. During the year the children achieved 81% results in 10th and 12th board exams. The entire children’s village educational performance was 97%. Three of the girls received scholarship and admission into B.Sc nursing course. Special tutors are arranged for children to better their academic performance.

During summer vacation special class are conducted for children for improving perfection on Languages and are also taken for a day trips. The children stay busy in different co-curricular activities like drawing, painting, craft, dance, music, yoga, meditation, games sports. Medical camps are also organized for all children and mothers.

SOS YOUTH FACILITY

There are 16 youngsters attending different schools and colleges. 6 have passed intermediate 1st year MPC out of which 5 have secured more than 60% in previous year and all continuing in 2nd year of MPC. A part time tutor has been employed to help with difficult subjects. Four youngsters joined diploma in polytechnic and one youth is pursuing PG in Physical Education, three youngsters joined Bachelors in computers application (BCA), one in Bachelor of business management from reputed colleges. Three completed their Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and three are in B.E. (Bachelor of Engineering). Two youngsters are in rented accommodation and have completed their Diploma in Mechanical Engineering and are working for an ‘Auto engineering company’ at Vizag, as well as preparing for their examination.

SOS KINDERGARTEN

A well equipped kindergarten has 50 tiny tots on rolls. Out of which 30 are from the neighboring community and 20 from Children’s Village. Children learn through play way method, visual aids. They enjoy learning basics of alphabets, rhymes, numbers and shapes through Kids Computers. Children are taken for outings and picnics.

FAMILY STRENGTHENING PROGRAMME

Family Strengthening programme was started in 2003, reaching out to only 22 children living in 14 beneficiary families. At present the programme is reaching out to 264 families and 475 child beneficiaries. The programme facilitated 254 families to receive A.P Government sponsored Arogyashree Health Cards to get Rs. 2 lakh health insurance coverage, free medical treatment at corporate as well as notified hospitals. Informal networking with like minded NGOs and Government health centers facilitated to organize comprehensive medical check ups, immunization to children, counseling on hygiene, income generating skill trainings, nutrition and awareness drive on HIV/AIDS. In the domain of Self Help Groups 113 program participants were tagged into DWACRA (development of Women and Child in rural areas).
